A traditional 2 hour class: Students stretch and practice techniques at there own pace up to a half an hour before class starts. Class starts with 20 minutes of working on hand techniques (blocks, strikes, and grabs). The next 10 minutes is spent stretching with a partner, and then instructor led stretches. Kicking combinations are done with partners, kick bags, or while in line for approximately 25 minutes. Emphasis is placed on balance, kick placement, power, and technique. Following kicks, a ten-minute break is taken. During the break students can elect to break wood or concrete patio stones with the assistance of a black belt. Following break, students line back up and practice their forms. (Each belt has a form "attached" to it. A student is required to know all of their forms up to their belt level.) After approximately 25 minutes spent on forms, one-step instruction or self-defense is taught. (One steps are a practiced way to learn defense against an aggressor attacking you with a hand technique). The last 15-20 minutes of class are used for sparring. Sparring is non-contact. When sparring is complete, the class lines up and is dismissed. Classes can and will change from the pre-described format on a regular basis. Falling classes, weapon instruction, testings, and visiting instructors from other martial arts schools change the flow of the class. Concentrated workout: Master Higgins will instruct all aspect of Tae Kwon Do, but on a more concentrated level. Students can expect to spend an extended amount of time on one or more or the many different TKD techniques taught in a traditional class. This instruction allows the student to better train him or herself for an extended time in a specific area of Tae Kwon Do. The hour length also fits much better into the busy students schedule. Our Tkd for kids classes are offered for youth only (6 to 12 years old). Students will advance through the "Bar System", a tiered testing system developed especially for this program. The testing qualifications will be Blue Bar (5 classes), Red Bar (12 classes), followed by Gold Bar (18 classes). This is the normal timeframe for the standard class, but allows the younger students to mark their progress incrementally. Also it should be noted that the above criteria is a guideline, and students may progress at a staggered pace, depending on the individual. Following a successful Gold bar testing the student will test for their Yellow stripe. After a successful yellow stripe testing they will have the option of participating in the Mixed classes on Tuesday and Thursday nights, as well as our Tuesday night program in Candia. The class is one hour long (from 5:30 to 6:30 pm). Students will be taught all aspects of traditional Tae Kwon Do, but at a slower, understandable pace. After a short time students will be able to attend the Concentrated and traditional workouts at no extra cost. |
