Tonfa form

When documenting forms, I use the methodology of referencing direction by using (minimally) A, B, C, & D


All katas begin with the practioner facing D.
"C" is behind you
"B" is to your left
"A" to your right.

The kata begins in a Parallel stance, basic grip, facing D

  1. Move RIGHT foot forward, forming a rear foot /cat stance raise both arms out in an arc above head, face D
  2. Draw RIGHT foot up to CRANE stance bring to tonfas in front of chest, parallel/ vertical, face D
  3. Step forward to RIGHT FRONT stance double low block, face D
  4. Draw back RIGHT foot to RIGHT SIDE STANCE, weight on RIGHT leg, locked LEFT leg, reverse high rise block
  5. SHIFT weight to LEFT to LEFT SIDE STANCE single thrust with RIGHT tonfa
  6. Double FIGURE 8 with right tonfa, flip back to basic position
  7. High rise block RIGHT tonfa
  8. SHIFT weight to RIGHT SIDE STANCE single thrust with LEFT tonfa
  9. Double FIGURE 8 with LEFT tonfa flip back to basic position
  10. Horizontal flip and back with LEFT tonfa
  11. Bring RIGHT foot to LEFT, knees slightly bent bring tonfas in front of chest, parallel/vertical
  12. Step forward to RIGHT FRONT STANCE Low X block
  13. Retract RIGHT foot, feet together, knees bent, tonfas crossed in front of chest, with tension
  14. Step forward to a RIGHT FRONT STANCE, double FIGURE 8.
  15. Retract RIGHT foot, feet together, knees bent, tonfas crossed in front of chest, with tension.
  16. Step into LEFT FRONT STANCE high rise block LEFT tonfa.
  17. Reverse thrust RIGHT tonfa.
  18. Retract LEFT foot, feet together at CENTER, tonfas crossed, with tension.
  19. RIGHT FRONT STANCE, high rise block RIGHT tonfa, with LEFT, reverse thrust at same time.
  20. Retract RIGHT foot, feet together at CENTER , tonfas crossed in front, with tension
  21. LEFT FRONT STANCE, high rise block LEFT tonfa, with RIGHT reverse thrust at same time.
  22. Move LEFT foot, forming cat stance to front step forward into LEFT FRONT STANCE with high rise block LEFT tonfa, RIGHT thrust. LEFT thrust.
  23. Reverse (RIGHT TONFA) across and down strike. (flip to extended low right, bring up to high left, and strike down high left to low right).
  24. RIGHT tonfa over LEFT shoulder. Reverse turn to RIGHT FRONT STANCE (180 turn), face C. RIGHT tonfa flip strike left to right across to B, bring up RIGHT tonfa in an oblique grip over RIGHT shoulder, followed by a down strike.
  25. RIGHT tonfa single figure 8 to C
  26. Step forward to LEFT FRONT STANCE. Left tonfa thrust.
  27. LEFT tonfa single figure 8 to C
  28. Bring LEFT foot back to RIGHT, knees slightly bent bring tonfas in front of chest, parallel/vertical. Step forward to RIGHT FRONT STANCE. Do a simultaneous LEFT tonfa low block and a RIGHT tonfa thrust
  29. RIGHT foot back to left, knees slightly bent bring tonfas in front of chest, parallel/vertical. Step forward to RIGHT FRONT STANCE. Do a simultaneous RIGHT tonfa low block and a LEFT tonfa thrust.
  30. RIGHT FOOT back to left. STEP FORWARD TO A LEFT FRONT STANCE. High rise block LEFT tonfa to C
  31. STEP FORWARD TO A RIGHT FRONT STANCE. RIGHT tonfa thrust followed LEFT tonfa thrust.
  32. Pick up RIGHT leg. Reverse turn 180 degrees to the LEFT, facing D. Bring RIGHT foot to LEFT foot, knees bent, bring tonfas in front of chest, parallel/ vertical.
  33. STEP FORWARD TO A RIGHT FRONT STANCE. Perform Double low block.
  34. Draw back RIGHT foot to RIGHT SIDE STANCE. Weight on RIGHT LEG, LEFT leg locked. LEFT (reverse) high rise block.
  35. Raise and extend RIGHT tonfa. Shift stance. Strike DOWN AND ACROSS (high right to low left).
  36. Draw RIGHT tonfa up on LEFT side while raising RIGHT leg to CRANE stance. Across and down upper left to lower right.
  37. Drop RIGHT leg to parallel stance while doing a RIGHT tonfa overhead strike, facing D.
  38. Pick up LEFT LEG and shift to LEFT SIDE STANCE. RIGHT high rise block with LEFT low block.
  39. SHIFT to RIGHT SIDE STANCE.
  40. Single Figure 8 with LEFT tonfa.
  41. Bring LEFT tonfa up on LEFT side while raising LEFT leg to CRANE stance LEFT leg to CRANE stance. LEFT downward strike.
  42. Drop to parallel stance.
  43. RIGHT SIDE STANCE. LEFT low block
  44. Forward to RIGHT FRONT STANCE. LEFT thrust, followed by RIGHT thrust followed by a LEFT thrust.
  45. RIGHT tonfa single figure 8. Start high right---> low left. Bring RIGHT tonfa up on left side. High left---> low right strike.
  46. RIGHT tonfa on RIGHT shoulder. Overhead stike. Flip back to basic grip.
  47. Forward to LEFT FRONT STANCE. RIGHT thrust followed by LEFT thrust followed by RIGHT thrust.
  48. LEFT tonfa single figure 8. Start high left--> Low right. Bring LEFT tonfa up on right side. High right --> low left strike.
  49. LEFT tonfa on LEFT shoulder. Overhead strike. Flip back to basic grip.
  50. Bring RIGHT leg forward into RIGHT crane stance both tonfa parallel in front.
  51. Step forward to RIGHT front stance double low block.
  52. Extend both tonfas grips outward/palms upward double underhand strike.
  53. Bring both tonfas over shoulders grips inward/palms down double downward strike.
  54. Pick up LEFT foot while TURNING to RIGHT (face A) forming LEFT back stance (weight on LEFT leg) LEFT tonfa high rise block RIGHT tonfa low back.
  55. Bring LEFT foot to RIGHT, retract / chamber both tonfas in front.
  56. PICK up RIGHT leg, dropping it behind forming RIGHT back stance (weight on RIGHT) RIGHT tonfa high rise block. LEFT tonfa low block.
  57. Bring RIGHT foot to LEFT, retract / chamber both tonfas in front
  58. Step forward to RIGHT FRONT STANCE. RIGHT thrust. LEFT thrust.
  59. RIGHT tonfa single figure 8. Start high right---> low left strike. Bring RIGHT tonfa up on left side. High left--> low right strike
  60. RIGHT TONFA on RIGHT shoulder, overhead strike. Flip back to basic grip.
  61. Bring LEFT foot to RIGHT, retract / chamber both tonfas in front.
  62. PICK up LEFT foot, turn 180 to B, in LEFT SIDE STANCE, face D. LEFT tonfa high rise block. RIGHT tonfa low block.
  63. RIGHT tonfa single figure8 WHILE LEFT tonfa remains in rise block. Start high right--> low left strike. Bring RIGHT tonfa up on left side. High left-----> low right strike, flip right tonfa back to basic grip.
  64. RIGHT foot up CRANCE stance both tonfas parallel in front.
  65. STEP forward to RIGHT front stance double low block, face D
  66. Draw RIGHT foot back to cat stance, raise both tonfa out in arc (same as beginning)
  67. Draw RIGHT foot back to parallel stance both tonfa by side bow and finish.
