Bo Staff form

When documenting forms, I use the methodology in Choi's encyclopedia of referencing direction by using (minimally) A, B, C, & D


All katas begin with the practioner facing D.
"C" is behind you
"B" is to your left
"A" to your right.

The kata begins in a ready stance, with the right hand grasping the bo held vertically behind the right shoulder

  1. Swing Bo upward left, bring Bo down on right side in the Yoi position.
  2. Move the left foot to C forming a Right Front Stance to D while executing an Overhead Strike with the Right Hand leading
  3. Move the left foot to D forming a Riding Stance while executing a Reverse Downward Thrust to C from the left side
  4. Forward two handed thrust to D at midsection level
  5. Move the right foot to A forming a Left Reverse Defense Stance towards B with a Low Outward Strike
  6. Move the left foot counterclockwise while pivoting the right foot to form a Left Front Stance towards B, keeping the Bo inside the left knee and over the left shoulder with an Upward Strike to the groin area
  7. Pivot clockwise 180° to A forming a Right Front Stance with a doublehand right side block
  8. Rotate the bo staff counterclockwise to deliver an Overhead Strike with the Right hand leading
  9. Inside to Outside Block
  10. Pivot 90° to D in a Left Front stance, then shift forward to a Right Front Stance pulling the Bo over the right shoulder with the left hand leading
  11. Bring the Left foot to the Right foot, feet together, knees bent in a slight jumping motion with a downward strike to D
  12. Drop the left foot back to C, forming a Right Front Stance to D, with an Inside to Outside block (right to left)
  13. Move the left foot forward forming a Yoi position towards D
  14. Drop the left foot back to C, forming a Right Front stance to D with the Bo over the right shoulder with left hand leading
  15. Bring the Left foot to the Right foot, feet together, knees bent in a slight jumping motion with a downward strike to D
  16. Drop the left foot back to C, forming a Right Front Stance to D, with an Inside to Outside block (right to left)
  17. Move the left foot forward forming a Yoi position towards D
  18. Move the Right foot forward, forming a Right Front Stance to D with the Bo over the right shoulder Overhead Strike
  19. Inside to Outside block (right to left)
  20. Move the Right foot to A shifting to a Left Rear Defense stance with an Inward Pinning Strike to the left side
  21. Slide Bo upward with the left hand, keeping the right hand stationary, the quickly thrust down for a Reverse Downward Thrust to the opponents foot.
  22. Move the right foot forward in a Right Front Stance to B rotating the Bo counterclockwise to a Vertical Block, left hand uppermost
  23. Rotate the bo clockwise and over the right shoulder, left hand leading, then an Overhead Downward Strike
  24. Pull the bottom of the Bo back upwards for a Reverse Upward Strike to the face, left hand leading
  25. Pull the Bo down with the left hand, pushing up with the right for a Overhead Downward Strike
  26. Sweep the Bo staff downward to the right and return with a Circular Overhead Strike, right hand leading
  27. Inside to Outside block (right to left)
  28. Pivot clockwise 180° to A in a Left Rear Defence Stance with an Inward Pinning Strike to the left side
  29. Slide Bo upward with the right hand, keeping the left hand stationary, the quickly thrust down for a Reverse Downward Thrust to the opponents foot.
  30. Move the right foot forward in a Right Front Stance to B rotating the Bo counterclockwise to a Vertical Block, left hand uppermost
  31. Rotate the bo counterclockwise and over the right shoulder, left hand leading, then an Overhead Downward Strike
  32. Pull the bottom of the Bo back upwards for a Reverse Upward Strike to the face, left hand leading
  33. Pull the Bo down with the left hand, pushing up with the right for a Overhead Downward Strike
  34. Sweep the Bo staff downward to the right and return with a Circular Overhead Strike, right hand leading
  35. Inside to Outside block (left to right)
  36. Slide the left foot toward the right, drop the right foot back to C forming a Left Rear Defence stance to D with an Inward Pinning Strike to the left side
  37. Slide Bo upward with the right hand, keeping the left hand stationary, the quickly thrust down for a Reverse Downward Thrust to the opponents foot.
  38. Move the right foot forward in a Right Front Stance to D rotating the Bo counterclockwise to a Vertical Block, left hand uppermost
  39. Rotate the bo counterclockwise and over the right shoulder, left hand leading, then an Overhead Downward Strike
  40. Keeping the right hand stationary, pull the Bo back through it with the left hand, then thrust is quickly back forward until your left hand meets your right with a Sliding Thrust to the face
  41. Move backwardsto the left by crossing the right foot over the left with an Inside to Outside block to D
  42. Shift your weight to your right foot and raise your left foot in a stomping motion forming a Riding stance towards A
  43. Side strike (right to left) with right hand leading
  44. Pivot clockwise 90° to a Right Front Stance towards D while rotating the Bo clockwise to a Vertical Block, left hand uppermost
  45. Rotate the bo counterclockwise and over the right shoulder, left hand leading, then an Overhead Downward Strike
  46. Keeping the right hand stationary, pull the Bo back through it with the left hand, then thrust is quickly back forward until your left hand meets your right with a Sliding Thrust to the face
  47. Inside to Outside block (left to right)
  48. Bring the right foot back to a ready stance swing the bo overhead into a Yoi position
  49. Rotate the bo counterclockwise placing it behind your right shoulder
  50. Bow out
